LeBron James has confirmed that a one-on-one game against his son Bronny in 2014 ended when he shattered the family’s driveway backboard at their Miami home.
The four-time NBA champion addressed the long-rumored incident on Monday night, moments after the Los Angeles Lakers’ 120-101 victory over the Washington Wizards. James, who finished that game with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists, told reporters he “drove around” Bronny and dunked so hard that the glass exploded.
“We had a hoop in our driveway and I didn’t mean to shatter the glass, but I shattered it,” James recalled. He added that he could not remember whether the hoop was ever replaced. Bronny, standing nearby, answered, “I don’t think you did,” drawing a laugh from his father.
The story resurfaced last Friday after the Lakers’ 116-99 win over the Brooklyn Nets, when Bronny, now 21, mentioned the driveway matchup in the locker room. James said the outcome was never in doubt, noting that the game took place during his Miami Heat years. “That’s like Miami Bron—invincible Bron—so it’s not like he was about to win,” he joked.
While fans continue to hope for a rematch, James is averaging 20.9 points, six rebounds and seven assists in the 2025-26 regular season.
