Former NBA guard Mo Williams is expected to be added to the University of Kentucky men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach, according to KSR reporter Jack Pilgrim.

Williams, 42, most recently served as head coach at Jackson State. The move to Lexington would reunite him with his son, Mason Williams, who became head coach Mark Pope’s first commitment of the spring recruiting period.

The 13-year NBA veteran played two stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers, earning All-Star honors in the 2008-09 season alongside LeBron James and returning for the franchise’s 2016 championship run. After retiring, Williams began his coaching career with stops at Cal State Northridge and Alabama State before taking over the Jackson State program in 2022.

Pope recently labeled Williams “one of the best basketball guys and ambassadors to the game.” With an opening on Kentucky’s bench, the Wildcats are moving to finalize the hire.
