NEW YORK – Mar. 30, 2026 — Two weeks before the postseason tips off, ESPN’s Basketball Power Index and a group of network insiders have mapped out the most vulnerable areas for the league’s 10 leading title hopefuls and pinpointed the opponents best equipped to exploit them.
Eastern Conference
Detroit Pistons

• 77.6% chance to reach the conference semifinals; 30.6% chance to reach the NBA Finals
• Weakness: Three-point scoring — 29th in attempts and 28th in makes
• Opponents to avoid: Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, both of whom funnel offenses outside and rank among the league leaders in allowing high volumes of threes.
Boston Celtics
• Playoff berth clinched | No. 2 in East
• 72% chance to reach the conference semifinals; 17.4% chance to reach the NBA Finals
• Weakness: Fast-break production — last in the NBA at 11.4 transition points per game
• Opponent to avoid: Detroit, owner of the East’s best half-court defense, which could force Boston to score exclusively in the grind.

• No. 3 in East
• 75.7% chance to reach the conference semifinals; 20.7% chance to reach the NBA Finals
• Weakness: Bench offense — 28th with 31.2 points per game
• Opponent to avoid: Miami Heat, whose league-leading reserve unit scores 42.9 points per night and plays at the NBA’s fastest pace, potentially wearing down New York’s starters.
Cleveland Cavaliers
• No. 4 in East
• 77.8% chance to reach the conference semifinals; 20.8% chance to reach the NBA Finals
• Weakness: Corner-three defense — opponents hit 40.9% from that spot, third worst in the league
• Opponent to avoid: Charlotte Hornets, who lead the NBA in made threes (16.2 a game) and rank third in accuracy at 38%.
Western Conference
Oklahoma City Thunder
• Playoff berth clinched | No. 1 in West
• 91.8% chance to reach the conference semifinals; 55.3% chance to reach the NBA Finals
• Weakness: Corner-three coverage — allow a league-high 4.6 made corner threes per game

San Antonio Spurs
• Playoff berth clinched | No. 2 in West

• Weakness: Closing games — 13 losses after leading by 10 or more, tied for fourth most in the NBA
• Opponent to avoid: Los Angeles Lakers, owners of a league-best 22-7 clutch record behind Luka Dončić, Austin Reaves and LeBron James.
Los Angeles Lakers
• No. 3 in West
• 58.2% chance to reach the conference semifinals; 4.1% chance to reach the NBA Finals
• Weakness: Rim protection — 61.3% opponent shooting in the paint, 29th in the league

Denver Nuggets
• No. 5 in West
• 69.3% chance to reach the conference semifinals; 8.9% chance to reach the NBA Finals
• Weakness: Creating defensive pressure — last in forced turnovers (11.8) and 29th in blocks (3.9)
• Opponent to avoid: Houston, whose possession edge from offensive rebounds could widen against a defense that rarely takes the ball away.
Minnesota Timberwolves
• No. 6 in West
• 37.8% chance to reach the conference semifinals; 1.9% chance to reach the NBA Finals
• Weakness: Second-unit scoring — 23rd at 33.5 bench points per game, though recent trades have helped
• Opponent to avoid: Oklahoma City, considered the deepest roster in the league with up to 13 playable options.
The playoff field will be finalized in mid-April, when matchups will reveal whether these vulnerabilities become decisive or merely academic.
