The Boston Celtics locked up a place in the NBA playoffs on Sunday by defeating the Charlotte Hornets, improving to 50-24 and tightening their grip on second place in the Eastern Conference.
Boston remains four games behind the Detroit Pistons for the conference’s No. 1 seed with eight regular-season games left. Securing the top position would give the Celtics home-court advantage through at least the first three rounds.
Forward Jayson Tatum paced the victory with 32 points and eight assists in just 31 minutes, maintaining the efficiency that has characterized Boston’s year. The Celtics have hovered near the conference’s upper tier since the season’s opening month and now have guaranteed themselves a return to the postseason for the 10th time in the past 11 years.
Head coach Joe Mazzulla’s squad will focus on seeding down the stretch as it attempts to overtake Detroit and enter the playoffs as the East’s top team.
