The Cleveland Cavaliers get another shot at the Miami Heat on Friday night, two days after a 120-103 defeat in South Florida exposed a sluggish opening stretch and an anemic bench effort.
Cleveland put up just 10 points in the first seven minutes Wednesday and never led again, even after trimming the deficit in the third quarter. Head coach Kenny Atkinson summed up the loss succinctly: “They made ’em; we didn’t.”
Several numbers underscored the gap. Cleveland’s reserves were outscored 43-14, and forward Evan Mobley finished with eight points on eight attempts despite Miami frequently playing without a traditional center. Meanwhile, the Heat spread the scoring around: eight players reached double figures, rookie Kelel Ware posted a plus-32 in 20 minutes while hitting from deep and controlling the boards, and Bam Adebayo contributed 17 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.
The Cavaliers expect reinforcements. Guard Max Strus is projected to return after sitting out Wednesday, and center Jarrett Allen is listed as probable, offering rim protection and rebounding the club lacked in the first meeting.
Miami could be shorthanded. Forward Jaime Jaquez Jr., who had 14 points and five assists in the opener, is questionable with an ankle issue. Guard Terry Rozier remains out for what the team called a “decision.”
Injury report
Cavaliers: Jarrett Allen (knee) probable; Jaylon Tyson (toe), Craig Porter Jr. (groin) and Dean Wade (ankle) out.
Heat: Jaime Jaquez Jr. (ankle) questionable; Terry Rozier (team decision) out.
Tipoff is set for Friday at Kaseya Center, where Cleveland’s priority is clear: start fast and match Miami’s energy from the opening possession.
