Basketball Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady believes Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns has not yet reached the ceiling suggested by his skill set. Speaking in comments published on March 26, 2026 by the New York Post, McGrady challenged the three-time All-Star to pair talent with determination, declaring, “Gotta have the want to.”
McGrady, a seven-time NBA All-Star who built his reputation on scoring outbursts and late-game heroics, said Towns owns “every physical tool” needed to dominate but questioned the consistency of the 28-year-old center’s competitive edge. “When you’re blessed with that kind of size and touch, the next step is about mentality,” McGrady stated.
Towns, selected first overall in the 2015 NBA Draft, has career averages of more than 22 points and 10 rebounds per game. Despite individual accolades—including the 2016 Rookie of the Year award—Minnesota has advanced past the first round of the playoffs only once during his tenure.
McGrady pointed to that playoff record as evidence that Towns must elevate his approach. “Stats are great,” he said, “but the great ones translate numbers into wins deep in May and June.”
The Timberwolves have positioned themselves for another postseason run, and McGrady suggested this spring could be pivotal. “The West is open,” he added. “If he decides every night to impose his will, there’s no telling how far that team can go.”
Towns has not publicly responded to McGrady’s remarks.
