Athens, Greece — Panathinaikos announced Tuesday that it has released veteran center Richaun Holmes, ending the former NBA player’s brief stint with the EuroLeague club.
Holmes, 32, joined Panathinaikos last August on a one-year contract that included a team option for 2026-27 and reportedly placed him among Europe’s highest-paid athletes. The 10-year NBA veteran averaged 7.9 points and 4.3 rebounds in 18.7 minutes over 19 EuroLeague appearances but saw his role shrink after suffering an MCL injury during the season.
Before heading overseas, Holmes logged 489 regular-season games in the NBA from 2015-25 and was Sacramento’s primary starting center between 2019 and 2022.
Expansion Windfall Could Exceed $20 Billion
Adding franchises in Las Vegas and Seattle and creating an “NBA Europe” division could generate at least $20 billion in one-time revenue for league owners, Sportico writers Kurt Badenhausen and Eben Novy-Williams estimate. Their projection includes roughly $15 billion in domestic expansion fees and another $5 billion from European entries, translating to more than $650 million per current ownership group.
