CHICAGO — Houston head coach Ime Udoka was tossed late in the fourth quarter of Monday’s 132-124 loss to the lottery-bound Bulls after arguing a series of flagrant and technical foul calls. Udoka objected to a flagrant assessed to rookie Amen Thompson and technicals given to Thompson and Kevin Durant, calling the decisions “soft as hell.”
Beyond the officiating, Udoka chastised his team’s effort. The Rockets surrendered 41 first-quarter points and trailed by 20 against a Chicago club that owned the NBA’s second-worst offensive rating since the All-Star break. “Poor start, disrespected the game,” Udoka said. “You look at the records, you look at who you’re playing against and don’t come out prepared.”
Lakers’ Streak Ends, but James Flourishes
Los Angeles saw its nine-game winning run halted Monday in Detroit, yet LeBron James continues to excel in what The Athletic’s Sam Amick describes as the league’s top “third-option” role. The recent surge has sparked talk that James could remain with the Lakers beyond this season, despite previous speculation linking him to Cleveland or Golden State should he play past 2025-26.
Borrego Strengthens Case in New Orleans
Interim coach James Borrego has guided the Pelicans to a 12-7 mark since the trade deadline, including nine double-digit victories. Management is expected to decide on the full-time position after the season, but forward Herbert Jones credited Borrego’s energy for turning the club around after replacing Willie Green earlier in the year.
Pelicans and Thunder Unveil Arena Plans
New Orleans announced an extensive renovation project for Smoothie King Center aimed at securing an extension to the team’s lease, which is set to expire in 2029. In Oklahoma City, the Thunder revealed that their planned arena, slated to open for the 2028-29 campaign, will carry the name Continental Coliseum.
