NBA lowers salary cap projection for 2026–27 to $165 million amid local TV shortfall

The NBA has notified its 30 franchises that the projected salary cap for the 2026-27 season has slipped to $165 million, down $1 million from the figure circulated in September, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

League officials attributed the adjustment to a decline in local media revenue, a growing concern as some regional sports networks struggle to meet financial obligations. Main Street Sports Group, which holds local broadcast rights for 13 teams, has reportedly missed several rights-fee payments and is edging toward insolvency.

The new forecast still represents roughly a 7 percent jump over the current $154.6 million cap, but the smaller increase could squeeze teams operating near the league’s first and second tax aprons or those mapping out significant cap-space moves in 2026.

With the regional model under pressure, the NBA is fast-tracking plans for a potential direct-to-consumer streaming platform that could launch as early as next season. While no final decision has been made, clubs have been encouraged to line up interim broadcast arrangements—traditional or streaming—while the league works toward a long-term solution.

Despite the slight downgrade, the cap is still expected to climb in the coming years, just not as steeply as some organizations had anticipated.
