Ben Simmons, 29, has not committed to playing another NBA game and remains unsigned, according to a report by Stefan Bondy of the New York Post.
Bondy wrote that the New York Knicks have expressed interest but can offer Simmons only a veteran minimum contract valued at slightly more than $3 million. The former All-Star has earned more than $200 million in his career and has undergone multiple back surgeries, factors that could influence his decision on whether to return.
Knicks Exploring Other Options
While monitoring Simmons, New York is also evaluating additional free agents. Bondy reported interest in guard Landry Shamet and at least one other unidentified player. The club is also awaiting clarity on Malik Beasley’s availability as the guard’s situation is tied to an ongoing federal gambling investigation.
Limited Interest Elsewhere
At least one other team has shown interest in Simmons, though its identity was not disclosed. The Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors have been mentioned as possibilities; each franchise has an open roster spot.
Most Recent Season
Simmons split the 2023-24 campaign between the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers, appearing in 51 games—his highest total since the 2020-21 season, when he last made the All-Star team. He averaged 5.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.6 assists.
With training camps approaching and only minimum-salary offers reported, the question remains whether the former No. 1 overall pick will return to the court or choose retirement.
