DETROIT — Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham is expected to be out for an extended stretch after being diagnosed with a collapsed lung, according to sources who spoke with ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The sources described the collapse as mild, but the former No. 1 overall pick will still require time away from the court to recover.
Cunningham exited Tuesday night’s matchup against the Washington Wizards with what the team initially listed as back spasms. The injury appeared to occur early in the first quarter when he dove for a loose ball. He stayed on the floor for several minutes before leaving the game midway through the period.
The 22-year-old, a two-time All-Star and a leading contender in this season’s MVP race, is averaging standout numbers for Detroit. The team has not provided a timetable for his return.
The Pistons are expected to update Cunningham’s status after further evaluation.
