Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo will miss at least one week after being diagnosed with a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The Bucks ruled out the two-time MVP roughly 90 minutes before Tuesday’s matchup with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Head coach Doc Rivers told reporters prior to tipoff that imaging on Antetokounmpo’s knee revealed “no damage,” but he did not offer a precise timetable beyond the planned re-evaluation in seven days.
Antetokounmpo sustained the injury Sunday against the Indiana Pacers. Late in the third quarter of Milwaukee’s 134-123 win, he landed awkwardly after a dunk following a spin move. He remained on the floor for a little over a minute before exiting for the night. Although he initially believed imaging would be unnecessary, the decision was reversed within 48 hours.
The 29-year-old has appeared in just 36 games this season while dealing with knee, groin and recurring calf issues. He is averaging 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists.
Milwaukee also ruled out center Myles Turner on Tuesday because of a calf strain.
The Bucks enter the night 11th in the Eastern Conference at 28-39, sitting 5.5 games behind the 10th-place Charlotte Hornets (34-34) for the final play-in spot. After wrapping up the home date with Cleveland, the club begins a four-game road trip Thursday in Utah.
