Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero says being left off this season’s All-Star roster sparked a self-evaluation that has lifted his play since the break.
In an interview with Marc J. Spears of Andscape, the 20-year-old admitted the opening months of the schedule did not meet his standards. “I’m always honest with myself,” Banchero said. “Over the All-Star break, I watched a lot of film from the early part of the season. I just wasn’t happy with what I put out.”
Banchero cited nagging injuries but emphasized his approach had to change. “I could’ve had a better mindset. But I know I’m an All-Star in this league,” he noted. “It’s about being honest with yourself and realizing you didn’t really deserve to be an All-Star. Then you come back better.”
The second-year big man has delivered on that vow. Across the last 10 games, he is averaging 26.2 points, 9.2 rebounds and 5.7 assists while shooting above 50 percent from the floor. Orlando has posted a 7-3 record during that span.
Head coach Jamahl Mosley pointed to Banchero’s increased assertiveness. “Paolo has been ultra-aggressive attacking and getting early baskets,” Mosley said. “He’s also been taking on the best player assignments defensively.”
Banchero and the Magic will look to maintain their momentum as the regular season enters its final stretch.
