LeBron James is not expected to entertain a move to the Golden State Warriors if he continues his career next season, according to sources cited by Lakers Daily’s Ashish Mathur.
The four-time NBA champion will become an unrestricted free agent this summer for the first time since 2018. Although various reports have hinted that Stephen Curry and Draymond Green might attempt to recruit the superstar to the Bay Area, league insiders told Mathur that James’ options are viewed as far more limited. Should he postpone retirement, the 39-year-old is believed to be weighing only three paths: re-signing with the Los Angeles Lakers, returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a third stint, or ending his playing career.
“A farewell tour with the Warriors would make no sense at all,” one source told Mathur. “It’s Lakers, Cavaliers or retirement.”
James and the Warriors share a notable postseason history. From 2015 to 2018, his Cavaliers faced Golden State in four consecutive NBA Finals, with the Warriors taking the title in 2015, 2017 and 2018, and Cleveland claiming a dramatic 2016 victory after overcoming a 3-1 series deficit.
The Akron native, who turns 42 in December, has not indicated publicly whether he intends to retire or play a 22nd NBA season. He is currently managing a left elbow contusion and chronic arthritis in his left foot.
