Calf Injury Sidelines Alex Sarr for Remainder of EuroBasket

Washington Wizards center Alex Sarr has been ruled out for the rest of EuroBasket 2025 after injuring his right calf, the French Basketball Federation announced on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old suffered the injury during France’s win over Slovenia on Saturday and did not play in Sunday’s loss to Israel. Team doctors said Sarr’s recovery timeline is “incompatible” with further participation in the tournament.

France (2-1) needs one victory in its final two Group B games—Tuesday against Poland and Thursday against Iceland—to secure a place in the single-elimination round of 16. Sarr’s absence further thins a frontcourt already missing Rudy Gobert, Victor Wembanyama, and Mathias Lessort, increasing the burden on forwards Guerschon Yabusele and Zaccharie Risacher.

The Wizards open training camp in about four weeks, with the regular season set to begin in just over seven weeks. The national team did not specify whether Sarr’s availability for NBA activities will be affected, but the recovery period is expected to last several weeks.

Last season’s No. 2 overall draft pick averaged 13.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.5 blocks in 27.1 minutes, earning All-Rookie First Team honors. Improving his shooting efficiency—39.4 percent from the field and 67.9 percent from the free-throw line—remains a focal point for his second NBA campaign.
