LOS ANGELES — A scramble for a loose ball sent Los Angeles Lakers guard Marcus Smart crashing into comedian Bill Maher on Sunday afternoon, but both men avoided serious injury as the Lakers beat the New York Knicks 110-97 at Crypto.com Arena.
The incident occurred near the sideline in the first half. Smart dove into the courtside seats, colliding directly with Maher. Television cameras later showed Maher flexing what appeared to be a jammed finger, while Smart briefly favored his left hand before returning to play.
Smart missed an open corner three immediately after the collision, then checked out for a short stretch. He ultimately re-entered the game and finished with five points on 1-of-10 shooting, including 0-for-5 from beyond the arc.
With LeBron James sidelined, Luka Doncic paced Los Angeles with 35 points, eight rebounds and four assists. The victory moved the Lakers to a 110-97 final score over New York.
Both Smart and Maher remained on the sideline following the contact, and no further medical attention was required.
