Phoenix, AZ — Suns swingman Dillon Brooks was arrested early Friday on suspicion of driving under the influence, the team confirmed. The 30-year-old, recovering from a fractured hand, addressed the incident privately with his teammates before Phoenix’s home game later that night.
“We’re not above anybody else. We all make mistakes,” guard Collin Gillespie said. “He owned it. He apologized to the team, but we’ve got his back.” Grayson Allen added that Brooks “feels really bad about it” and will speak publicly “whenever he feels like he needs to.” Brooks attended Friday’s contest but declined media interviews.
Suns Edge Pelicans; Maluach Blocks Five
Phoenix escaped with a 118-116 victory over New Orleans on Friday. Rookie lottery pick Khaman Maluach delivered a season-high 20 minutes and set a personal best with five blocks, raising his total to 15 in 28 games. “The biggest thing is just that he knows he’s getting consistent minutes,” coach Jordan Ott said. “We wouldn’t put you in there if we didn’t believe in you.”
Payton II Wants In If Seattle Returns
Warriors guard Gary Payton II said he would seek a move to any potential Seattle expansion team to follow in his father’s footsteps with the former SuperSonics. “Respectfully, I love it here so much,” he told The Athletic, “but if we do [have a Seattle team] when I’m still here, I definitely want to go back and play there.” He added that a franchise in Seattle would be “good for the city … and good for the NBA.”
Porzingis, Curry Listed as Questionable
Golden State upgraded forward Kristaps Porzingis and guard Seth Curry to questionable for Saturday’s game in Oklahoma City. Porzingis, limited to one appearance since his acquisition because of an unspecified illness, has been sidelined for nearly two months. Curry has not played since Jan. 30 while recovering from a knee injury.
