Knicks Confront Hard-Cap Limits Ahead of Training Camp

With NBA training camps scheduled to open later this month, the New York Knicks are navigating an unusual roster dilemma.

The club currently lists only 12 players on standard contracts, yet it has room to add just one veteran at the minimum salary. New York is pressed against the second tax apron after deploying the taxpayer mid-level exception on forward Guerschon Yabusele, leaving approximately $3.72 million below the hard cap.

A veteran’s minimum contract would hit the cap at $2,296,274, meaning the Knicks can afford exactly one such deal. League rules require at least 14 standard contracts, so the final spot would have to go to a draft-rights rookie for $1,272,870 unless the team creates additional flexibility through a trade.

Several free agents have surfaced as potential targets. Guard Malik Beasley, who ranked second in total three-pointers last season and is no longer under a federal gambling investigation, remains unsigned. Former Knicks guards Landry Shamet, Cameron Payne and Delon Wright are also on the market, as are Malcolm Brogdon and Ben Simmons. Numerous other veterans continue to seek contracts as well.

New York’s decision on how to fill its 13th roster slot—and eventually meet the 14-player minimum—will likely hinge on whether management can shed salary before camp begins.
