The arrival of James Harden has provided an immediate spark for the Cleveland Cavaliers, head coach Kenny Atkinson said this week. Atkinson noted the veteran guard has quickly developed on-court chemistry with Donovan Mitchell, describing both players as “hoop junkies” who share a passion for the game.
That partnership will be partially on hold Tuesday in Detroit, where Mitchell is set to miss his fourth consecutive game because of a right groin strain. Harden, meanwhile, remains in the lineup despite playing through a fractured right thumb.
Center Jarrett Allen, whose strong stretch predates Harden’s acquisition, credited the former MVP for boosting his confidence. “When big changes happen like that, your view shifts,” Allen said. “I’m just finding my rhythm. People pass me the ball, Kenny is drawing plays for me, things are just clicking.”
Cleveland’s regular-season success still leaves postseason questions. Mitchell has yet to advance beyond the second round, and Harden’s lone NBA Finals appearance came in 2012 with Oklahoma City.
Speaking after Sunday’s win in Brooklyn, Harden told HoopsHype he is taking his career “one game at a time,” acknowledging that retirement is on the horizon but hoping it remains “later than soon.”
Around the Central Division
Chicago Bulls: Second-year forward Matas Buzelis has averaged 24.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists over his past three games, shooting 52.0% from the field and 42.9% from three. The uptick followed a meeting with head coach Billy Donovan focused on shot selection and overall impact.
Indiana Pacers: Fifth-year big man Micah Potter is making a case for the club to pick up its team option for 2026-27. Over his last eight appearances, the 27-year-old is posting 15.4 points and 5.9 rebounds in 25.6 minutes while hitting 46.3% from long range. Head coach Rick Carlisle called Potter “a no-frills player” who fits well as a stretch big. If exercised, the option would carry a $2.8 million non-guaranteed salary.
