Former Brooklyn head coach Kenny Atkinson, now on the Cavaliers’ staff, expressed confidence in the Nets’ long-term plan after Cleveland edged Brooklyn 106-102 on Sunday.

“You definitely go through those moments,” Atkinson told reporters, referring to the club’s current struggles. “You’re going home and you’re taking that L after the game. It’s hard, especially when they start stacking up. Of course you worry if you’re a competitor.”

The defeat was Brooklyn’s eighth in a row, dropping the team to 15-45—near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. Still, Atkinson said he sees encouraging signs under first-year head coach Jordi Fernández.

“You see the development,” he added. “It’ll happen here, because they drafted really good talent. They got really good coaching, good coaching staff, good front office. It’ll break through. You’re just waiting for that, ‘When is that gonna happen?’”

Atkinson, who guided Brooklyn from 2016 to 2020, closed his remarks with a simple message for his former franchise: stay the course.
