Jeremy Lin announced on Instagram that he is retiring from professional basketball, closing a 15-year run that began at Harvard and carried him through the NBA and international leagues.

“As athletes, we are always aware that the possibility of retirement is never far away,” the 37-year-old guard wrote. “Actually saying goodbye to basketball today has been the hardest decision I’ve ever made.”

Undrafted in 2010, Lin signed his first NBA contract with the Golden State Warriors, then spent brief stints with the Houston Rockets and New York Knicks. During a 26-game stretch with New York in early 2012, he averaged 18.5 points and 7.7 assists, sparking the global “Linsanity” phenomenon.

He later returned to Houston and went on to play for the Los Angeles Lakers, Charlotte Hornets, Brooklyn Nets, Atlanta Hawks and Toronto Raptors. Lin appeared in 480 NBA games, posting career averages of 11.6 points and 4.3 assists, and captured an NBA championship with Toronto in 2019.

Since leaving the league, he has competed primarily in China and Taiwan, along with a brief G League appearance in 2021. Lin said he plans to apply lessons from basketball to the next chapter of his life. “I will forever be the kid who felt fully alive every time I touched a basketball,” he added.
