The Phoenix Suns have yet to cut ties with veteran guard Cole Anthony, who was obtained at this month’s trade deadline but has not been with the club, head coach Jordan Ott said Thursday. The coach pointed to recent backcourt injuries as the main reason the team is holding Anthony’s roster spot.
“It’s still the same. There hasn’t been much change,” Ott told reporters, noting that Phoenix continues to communicate with Anthony’s representatives.
The Suns begin a four-day break on Friday, and star guard Devin Booker (hip strain) is expected to return Tuesday in Sacramento or Thursday against Chicago, according to Arizona Sports 98.7. If Booker’s recovery stays on track, the organization could waive Anthony by Sunday—the last day a player can be released and remain postseason-eligible for another team.
Letting Anthony go would allow Phoenix to convert two-way guard Jamaree Bouyea to a standard contract, then fill Bouyea’s two-way slot before next Wednesday’s signing deadline.
Other buyout notes
Khris Middleton: Sources tell ClutchPoints that the Spurs have joined Denver in monitoring the forward’s situation with Dallas. The Mavericks have given Middleton roughly 48 hours to choose between a buyout and finishing the season in Dallas.
Lonzo Ball: Golden State, Denver and additional clubs looked into the free-agent guard after his recent release, but concerns over his surgically repaired knee cooled the interest, ClutchPoints reports. No deal is imminent.
D’Angelo Russell: Although shipped to Washington in the Anthony Davis trade and viewed as a logical buyout target, league interest in the guard has been minimal, per ClutchPoints. Russell holds a $5.97 million player option for 2026-27 that the Wizards would likely want reduced or removed; without a favorable landing spot, he may simply finish the year in Washington.
Chris Boucher: Many around the league believe the forward hopes to rejoin the Raptors after being waived by Utah this month, but it is unclear whether Toronto shares that enthusiasm, according to ClutchPoints.
