The San Antonio Spurs have reached an agreement to retain veteran center Mason Plumlee on a rest-of-season contract, agent Mark Bartelstein told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Thursday night.
Plumlee’s initial 10-day deal with San Antonio expired the same evening, but both sides had signaled interest in an extended stay. The 13-year veteran, who turns 36 next Thursday, signed the short-term contract while still completing rehab from December groin surgery.
Before joining the Spurs, Plumlee opened the campaign with the Charlotte Hornets. He appeared in 14 games, averaging 1.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists across 8.9 minutes. Increased roles for young big men Moussa Diabate and Ryan Kalkbrenner pushed him to the third spot on Charlotte’s depth chart. At the trade deadline, the Hornets sent Plumlee to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a deal that brought Ousmane Dieng to Charlotte; Oklahoma City waived Plumlee shortly after.
San Antonio’s frontcourt is already crowded—veterans Kelly Olynyk and Bismack Biyombo have played limited minutes—but the Spurs value Plumlee’s experience as they pursue their first playoff berth since 2019. Thursday’s injury report listed him as “return to competition reconditioning,” indicating he has recovered from surgery and is working toward game readiness.
Assuming the contract is finalized Friday, Plumlee will earn a minimum rest-of-season salary of $939,867, while the Spurs will carry a cap hit of $593,864.
