With five group-stage matchdays still to play, Finland, Germany, Serbia and Turkey have already clinched spots in the EuroBasket 2025 round of 16, FIBA announced on Saturday.
Finland and Germany sit at 3-0 in Group B, while Serbia and Turkey own identical 3-0 records in Group A. Under tournament rules, the top four teams from each six-team group progress to the single-elimination phase.
No other nation has been knocked out, but Czechia (Group A), Great Britain (Group B) and Montenegro (Group B) face uphill climbs after opening 0-3. Greece (2-0 in Group C), France (2-0 in Group D) and Poland (2-0 in Group D) can lock up advancement as early as Sunday with continued wins.
Germany stays perfect, but incident mars victory
The reigning World Cup champion Germany moved to 3-0 by defeating Lithuania on Saturday. Guard Dennis Schröder paced the attack with 26 points, six assists and four steals, while Franz Wagner added 24 points and seven rebounds. Daniel Theis chipped in 23 points and six boards.
At halftime, Schröder was subjected to racist monkey noises from a spectator while walking to the locker room. “Insults are part of sports, but racism doesn’t belong here,” the German captain said afterward.
FIBA identified the individual through video review and barred the fan from the remainder of the tournament. The organization said it is working with the Lithuanian delegation and local authorities to prevent similar incidents, reiterating that it “unequivocally condemns hate speech, discriminatory conduct, and racist language in any form.”
