Tippecanoe County, Ind. — Newly released police body-camera video captures Indiana State Police pulling over Memphis Grizzlies rookie center Zach Edey for driving 101 mph in a 55-mph zone last May.

The footage shows the officer stopping the 23-year-old near Purdue University, where Edey played college basketball. “You know exactly why I pulled you over,” the officer states. “You were going 101.”

Edey responds that he had been trying to pass another vehicle, prompting the officer to interrupt. “No, you don’t pass at 100,” she says. “The road is 55. You were going almost double the speed limit.” She adds, “You could pass someone at 80. Eighty? Okay. One hundred? One hundred is not okay. Ever.”

After handing over his license and registration, Edey receives citations for speeding and reckless driving. The officer notes that reckless driving is a jailable offense but allows him to leave with a warning to slow down.

Court records show Edey reached an agreement with prosecutors on July 23: he admitted to speeding, paid $639.50 in fines, and had the misdemeanor reckless-driving charge dismissed.

The 7-foot-4 Canadian, who averaged 9.2 points and 8.3 rebounds in 70 games last season, has not commented publicly. The Grizzlies and the NBA have not indicated whether disciplinary action is under consideration.
