The Los Angeles Lakers will honor Hall of Fame coach Pat Riley with a statue unveiling on Sunday, Feb. 22, outside Crypto.com Arena.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. PT and will be carried live on Spectrum SportsNet, Spectrum SportsNet+ and the team’s YouTube channel. A replay will be posted on Lakers.com after the event.
First Lakers coach immortalized
Riley becomes the franchise’s first head coach to receive a statue at the arena, joining players Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant.
Showtime architect
Named head coach early in the 1981-82 season, Riley introduced the up-tempo “Showtime” style that propelled Los Angeles to four additional NBA championships, including consecutive titles in 1987 and 1988.
After leaving the Lakers, he coached the New York Knicks and Miami Heat, capturing another title with Miami in 2006. Riley currently serves as the Heat’s President of Basketball Operations.
