The San Antonio Spurs never gave the short-handed Sacramento Kings a chance on Thursday night, racing ahead early and coasting to a 139-122 victory at Frost Bank Center.

Key facts

Mitch Johnson, mindful of the Kings’ ongoing losing streak and injury issues, urged his club to avoid a let-down. The message landed. San Antonio opened with energy, led throughout and pushed its winning streak to eight games while notching its 40th victory before sustaining 20 losses.

Rookie star Victor Wembanyama set the tone, finishing with 28 points and a double-double. His windmill dunk in the fourth quarter punctuated the night and cleared the way for both benches to empty midway through the period.

DeMar DeRozan and Keegan Murray briefly trimmed the deficit when Wembanyama rested, but Sacramento never pulled closer than single digits after Harrison Barnes buried a late third-quarter three-pointer that restored a double-figure cushion for the home side.

San Antonio will look to keep its momentum Saturday when Detroit visits. Sacramento, still searching for answers in a rebuilding season, heads back to Northern California with another defeat on its ledger.
