Westbrook Still Seeking Deal as Kings Weigh Options

Russell Westbrook remains a free agent with training camps approaching, and the Sacramento Kings are the lone team still showing interest, according to The Athletic’s Sam Amick.
Kings Need Roster Move Before Offering Contract
Amick reported that Sacramento will not commit to Westbrook unless it first frees space in a crowded backcourt. The most likely trade candidate is 23-year-old guard Devin Carter, whose rookie year was derailed by injury. Malik Monk had been mentioned earlier in the offseason, but league sources now indicate the Kings are no longer actively shopping him, citing a limited market.
If Sacramento completes a deal, Westbrook could receive what might be his final NBA contract. Without a trade, the future Hall of Famer’s options remain scarce.
Lakers Pegged as Fringe Contender
Los Angeles finished last season third in the Western Conference after a late-season surge, but exited in the first round of the playoffs. ESPN’s panel of NBA analysts now projects the Lakers to land sixth, narrowly avoiding the play-in tournament.
“The Lakers are arguably the most intriguing team in the West, as they make the transition into the Luka Doncic era with all-time leading scorer LeBron James still on the roster,” ESPN wrote. James, who will turn 41 during the upcoming season, and Doncic are set for their first full year together.
Suns Face Skepticism After Roster Overhaul
Phoenix revamped its roster after missing the postseason for the first time in five years. Kevin Durant was traded, Bradley Beal accepted a buyout, and the organization hired head coach Jordan Ott and general manager Brian Gregory while extending franchise scoring leader Devin Booker.
Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes was unimpressed, arguing the Suns should not be praised for “putting out fires they set in the first place.” Hughes contended that doubling down on Booker—already under contract through 2028—instead of seeking draft capital epitomizes the franchise’s recent decision-making under owner Mat Ishbia.
