Knicks and Timberwolves Stay in the Hunt for Malcolm Brogdon While Warriors Await Resolution

The New York Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves continue to monitor veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon as the Golden State Warriors work through a contract standoff with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga, league sources told Basketball Insiders.

Knicks, Wolves Remain Interested

According to NBA reporter Jake Fischer, both New York and Minnesota have kept Brogdon “on their radar.” The Knicks currently have only one open roster slot, which they can fill with a veteran-minimum deal.

Warriors Tied Up by Kuminga Negotiations

Golden State has also shown interest in the 2022-23 Sixth Man of the Year, but progress has stalled while the club negotiates with Kuminga. The 21-year-old forward has yet to sign a $7.9 million qualifying offer issued earlier this summer, and he has not accepted the Warriors’ reported two-year, $45 million proposal. Restricted free agents have until Oct. 1 to accept a qualifying offer, and team officials expect talks to linger into September.

The impasse has likewise delayed anticipated agreements with Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton, Gary Payton II, and second-round pick Will Richard.

Multiple Clubs Explored Brogdon Early in the Offseason

Fischer previously reported that as many as eight teams—including the Los Angeles Clippers, Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers, and Milwaukee Bucks—showed interest in Brogdon shortly after free agency opened. In a July 17 update, he listed the Sacramento Kings, New Orleans Pelicans, Timberwolves, and Warriors as clubs still pursuing the guard. Milwaukee was described as an unlikely destination after the Bucks added Cole Anthony on a buyout following his release from Memphis. Sacramento is expected to land Russell Westbrook later in the offseason.

Brogdon’s Recent Production and Contract Status

Brogdon, 32, appeared in 24 games (13 starts) for the Washington Wizards last season, averaging 12.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.1 assists in 23.5 minutes per night. He shot 43.3% from the field and 28.6% from three-point range. His best outing came on Nov. 30 in Milwaukee, when he scored 29 points on 10-of-15 shooting in a 124-114 loss.

The 6-foot-4 guard missed the remainder of the season after spraining his ankle in February and has played just 63 games over the past two years. With his two-year, $45 million contract now expired, Brogdon becomes extension-eligible this summer as he prepares for his 10th NBA campaign in 2025-26.

For now, the Knicks and Timberwolves remain positioned to pounce while the Warriors wait for clarity on Kuminga’s future.
