Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves, who entered the NBA without hearing his name called on draft night in 2021, is now featured on the cover of SLAM Magazine’s latest issue.
In a conversation with SLAM reporter Franklyn Calle, the 27-year-old recalled the self-belief that carried him from a two-way deal to a projected All-Star payday this summer. “I always trusted the way I play,” Reaves said, noting that doubt surfaced when scholarship offers and draft interest were limited. “I knew if the opportunity came, I’d capitalize. The hard part was getting that chance.”
Choosing the Lakers Over a Second-Round Selection
Reaves confirmed he could have been selected late in the 2021 draft but elected to become an undrafted free agent so he could sign with the Lakers. Guided by his agents’ projections, he believed Los Angeles offered a clearer path to a standard contract.
The strategy paid off days before the 2021-22 season. After impressing at LeBron James’ informal minicamp in Las Vegas, Reaves joined Lakers vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka on a Zoom call. Pelinka offered him the 14th spot on the regular roster, ending his two-way status. “We signed it as fast as possible,” Reaves said.
Rapid Rise in Los Angeles
Since that moment, Reaves has advanced from rotation piece to key starter. He is averaging All-Star-level numbers this season and is set to reach unrestricted free agency in July, when a significant new contract is expected.
Looking back, the Arkansas native admitted the past five years still feel surreal. “There were only a handful of people who thought I’d be here when I was 17 or 18,” he said. “I’ve sacrificed a lot and put in the work, so being in this position is fun—and I want to keep building on it.”
Veteran guard Marcus Smart, acquired by Los Angeles in the offseason, told reporters he is unsurprised by Reaves’ ascent and believes others should not be either.
Reaves’ immediate focus remains steering the Lakers back into the postseason while solidifying the résumé that has taken him from undrafted prospect to the cover of a premier basketball publication.
