The 42nd edition of FIBA EuroBasket tips off Wednesday, Aug. 27, and Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic headlines Slovenia’s bid for a second continental title.

EuroBasket returns with several NBA standouts in action, including Greece’s Giannis Antetokounmpo and Serbia’s Nikola Jokic. Slovenia will try to rebound from a 1-5 exhibition run that included a lone victory over Great Britain and defeats to Serbia, Latvia, Lithuania and Germany (twice). Doncic appeared to avoid a serious knee issue after a brief scare against Latvia and has played every game since.

Event format

The tournament features 24 nations split into four groups of six. Each team faces every other team in its group once, with the top four advancing to the single-elimination Round of 16 on Sept. 6-7. Quarterfinals are set for Sept. 9-10, semifinals for Sept. 12 and the championship game, along with the third-place contest, will be held Sept. 14.

Group games will be staged in Cyprus, Finland, Poland and Latvia. Slovenia’s group competes in Poland, while Riga, Latvia, hosts all knockout rounds.
