WASHINGTON — Washington Wizards general manager Will Dawkins said Sunday he believes newly acquired forward Anthony Davis will play again this season, though a firmer timetable should emerge during the NBA All-Star break.

Dawkins spoke two days after a report from The Athletic suggested the 10-time All-Star might be shut down for the year. Davis has been sidelined since Jan. 8 with a sprained finger on his non-shooting hand. The original estimate projected a six-week recovery.

“The plan for AD right now is to go back to Dallas and finish his rehab,” Dawkins told reporters. “During All-Star break, he takes another visit for a doctor. And that’s a big appointment for us to kind of see where his progress is at.”

The Wizards obtained Davis from the Dallas Mavericks in an eight-player deal completed ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline. At 14-37 entering Sunday’s matchup with the Miami Heat, Washington sits second-to-last in the Eastern Conference but has begun reshaping its roster for next season.

That makeover also includes four-time All-Star Trae Young, acquired from the Atlanta Hawks in January. Young is recovering from a sprained knee. Dawkins said the guard is participating in individual drills and limited two-on-two work and will be re-evaluated during the break. “He’s trending in a positive direction,” the GM noted.
