The Miami Heat emerged from Thursday’s trade deadline as one of only three NBA teams that made no moves, and they are now turning their attention to the season’s closing stretch.
Record and recent slide
Miami has gone 13-18 over its last 31 contests after opening the campaign 14-7. The club stands at 27-25 with 30 games remaining.
Spoelstra: Consistency is key
“League-wide, I think everybody is just glad that all of that is behind us, and we can just focus on the next 30 games,” head coach Erik Spoelstra said Friday before a shootaround in Boston. “We have great opportunities still ahead of us. We know what we have to work on is our consistency. We have a high ceiling, but we need to do it more consistently.”
Players relieved by roster stability
Center Bam Adebayo, the team’s captain, noted that the lack of trade activity removed uncertainty. “Guys got that weight off their shoulders, where they don’t know what’s going to happen to them,” he said. “It’s good to have that type of clarity. So now we can focus on basketball and try to stack these wins.”
Deadline targets and decisions
• According to a league source, Miami was prepared to discuss every player except Adebayo in talks for Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo.
• The Heat also explored the idea of acquiring Ja Morant, but his max-salary deal and injury history cooled their interest.
• Golden State forward Andrew Wiggins was linked to Miami, yet no first-round pick was offered for him.
• Guard Terry Rozier, away from the team all season following federal gambling charges, remained on the roster. Management is still weighing whether to waive his expiring contract, which would create a second standard-roster opening; the Heat have been carrying 14 players to stay near the luxury-tax threshold.
G League honors and roster options
Two-way guard Jahmir Young earned NBA G League Player of the Month for January after averaging 29.5 points, 9.6 assists and 4.9 rebounds with the Sioux Falls Skyforce.
With a roster spot available, South Florida Sun Sentinel reporter Ira Winderman listed several possibilities: converting Young’s two-way deal or signing a veteran via buyout/free agency. Potential names include Pat Connaughton, Georges Niang and Chris Boucher.
Looking ahead
Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald noted that the organization chose to stick to its guiding principles at the deadline, a decision that will shape both the immediate playoff push and future roster construction.
