Grizzlies Expected to Shop Ja Morant Again After Season

The Memphis Grizzlies plan to reopen trade discussions involving two-time All-Star guard Ja Morant once the 2026 offseason begins, according to a report from The Athletic.

Reporter Joe Vardon, citing league sources, wrote that keeping Morant past this week’s trade deadline should not be interpreted as a shift in strategy. Memphis has already dealt Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. for a combined seven first-round picks and a first-round swap, signaling a full rebuild around younger players Cedric Coward, Zach Edey and Jaylen Wells.

Morant, 26, is currently out with a sprained elbow that is not expected to be a season-ending injury. With the Grizzlies sitting at 20-29 and outside the Western Conference play-in picture, the club could opt to extend Morant’s absence to improve its lottery odds. However, allowing him to return might boost his market value ahead of summer negotiations.

Potential suitors have expressed concerns about Morant’s availability, attitude and recent dip in production, Vardon reported. His maximum-salary deal, set to pay $87 million over the two seasons following the current one, is also viewed as a hurdle.

Memphis reportedly found this week’s trade offers too modest, even after indicating a willingness to absorb long-term salary in exchange for stronger draft compensation. The Miami Heat, Sacramento Kings, Milwaukee Bucks and Minnesota Timberwolves were among teams linked to Morant before the deadline. That list could evolve depending on postseason outcomes and roster needs across the league.
