The Brooklyn Nets have waived guard Cam Thomas, clearing the 24-year-old to sign with any team immediately, according to sources cited by ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Thomas appeared in 24 games this season, starting eight, and averaged 15.6 points after missing 20 contests with a left hamstring strain. He accepted a $5.9 million qualifying offer last summer when contract negotiations with Brooklyn stalled, leaving him on a one-year deal as a restricted free agent.
“Super excited, ready to actually help and contribute to another team,” Thomas told ESPN Andscape’s Marc Spears. “My next team is getting elite scoring, good playmaking and a good combo guard.”
Last season, the LSU product posted 24.0 points and 3.8 assists in 25 games but was again limited by hamstring issues. His relationship with the Nets appeared to fray on Jan. 23, when head coach Jacque Vaughn removed him from a matchup against the Boston Celtics after he declined to shoot as the shot clock wound down, opting to pass instead.
By cutting Thomas now, Brooklyn relinquishes its right to match offers, allowing the guard to explore unrestricted free agency ahead of the offseason. He is expected to draw interest from contenders seeking additional backcourt scoring, whether in a reserve role or the starting lineup.
