The Cleveland Cavaliers have selected Eli Kell-Abrams as head coach of the Cleveland Charge, the club’s NBA G League affiliate, the team announced in a press release.
“We are very excited to have Eli join our Charge family and the long list of talented, hard-working coaches we have had here,” Charge general manager Liron Fanan said in the statement. “Eli has an infectious personality, great NBA experience and a really sharp basketball mind that will be an excellent combination to lead our team this upcoming season.”
Kell-Abrams arrives after two seasons as the Portland Trail Blazers’ head video coordinator, where he also contributed to on-court player development, game planning and opponent scouting. His NBA résumé includes previous staff roles with the Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat.
The 30-year-old coach replaces Chris Darnell, who guided the Charge last season before joining Doug Christie’s new staff with the Sacramento Kings. Darnell became the seventh consecutive Charge head coach to transition to an NBA assistant role, a path taken by predecessors such as Jordi Fernández, who led the affiliate from 2014–16 and is now head coach of the Brooklyn Nets.
The Charge recently unveiled a rebrand featuring new logos, which the team displayed alongside Monday’s coaching announcement.
