The Cleveland Cavaliers have contacted free-agent guard Malik Beasley, and the New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves have done the same, according to a report from HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.
Beasley, 28, was recently cleared as a target in a federal gambling probe but remains under investigation. Interest from multiple teams resurfaced after the update on his legal status.
Cleveland may have a rotation opening after announcing Tuesday that wing Max Strus will miss three to four months following foot surgery. Because of salary-cap limitations, both the Cavaliers and Knicks could offer Beasley only a veteran minimum contract.
The Pistons nearly extended a three-year, $42 million offer before the gambling inquiry became public, then pivoted to other options. Beasley played all 82 games for Detroit last season, averaging 16.3 points while shooting 43.0 percent from the field and 41.6 percent from three-point range, earning a spot as a finalist for Sixth Man of the Year.
The Florida State product has appeared with six teams in nine NBA seasons—the Nuggets, Timberwolves, Jazz, Lakers, Bucks and Pistons—serving primarily as a perimeter scoring option. Of the clubs currently linked to him, the Cavaliers are the only one he has not previously represented.
