Clippers stunned as reports surface of new James Harden trade request

News that James Harden may seek another move caught the Los Angeles Clippers off guard, several players said Tuesday, even as the club continues one of the NBA’s hottest runs.

According to Tony Jones of The Athletic, Harden is exploring options to leave Los Angeles. Multiple outlets reported that the Cleveland Cavaliers have become a serious bidder, with a potential package built around guard Darius Garland and additional draft assets headed to the Clippers.

“Of course I’m surprised to hear the news,” forward Kawhi Leonard told reporters. “But he’s got to do what is best for him. I respect his decision. At the end of the day, he’s still my brother.”

Harden has now asked out of four franchises in five seasons. The difference this time is the timing: Los Angeles has won 17 of its last 21 games and believed it was gaining momentum despite Monday’s loss to Philadelphia.

“It was shocking,” teammate John Collins said. “Our season turned around. This came out of left field.”

Sources indicated Harden is expected to pursue a new two-year contract this summer, while the Clippers have long focused on preserving salary-cap flexibility for 2027, a gap that may have accelerated trade discussions.

Head coach Tyronn Lue summed up Harden’s value succinctly: “James means a lot to this team. You’ve seen it.”
