SAN FRANCISCO — Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry will not play Tuesday night against the Philadelphia 76ers because of a lingering issue in his right knee, the team announced.
The injury, diagnosed as patellofemoral pain syndrome—commonly called “runner’s knee”—has bothered the two-time MVP since an individual workout in Minneapolis on Jan. 24. Curry sat out one contest against the Minnesota Timberwolves last Monday but attempted to play through discomfort until leaving Friday’s 131-124 loss to the Detroit Pistons.
Late in the third quarter of that game, Curry grimaced after a floater, headed to the bench during the next timeout and was ruled out shortly afterward. He was later seen icing the knee and described the pain as “super weird” and “something that I hadn’t felt before.”
Golden State lists the 36-year-old star as day-to-day. Head coach Steve Kerr said Curry’s availability moving forward will be determined jointly by the player and Rick Celebrini, the franchise’s director of sports medicine and performance.
The Warriors will also remain without forward Jonathan Kuminga, who is set to miss a fifth straight game with a bone bruise in his left knee. Kuminga returned to on-court work over the weekend and is nearing a comeback. His name has surfaced in trade discussions ahead of Thursday afternoon’s deadline, which falls a few hours before Golden State visits the Phoenix Suns.
