CHICAGO — With Thursday’s NBA trade deadline fast approaching, the Chicago Bulls continue to gauge the market for immediate and future roster moves.
League sources told the Chicago Sun-Times that executive vice president Artūras Karnišovas has contacted the New Orleans Pelicans about forward Zion Williamson and rookie center Yves Missi and has also placed a call to the Indiana Pacers regarding guard Bennedict Mathurin.
Second-round picks viewed as key assets
Chicago recently secured two future second-round selections by acting as a facilitator in Sunday’s three-team deal between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Sacramento Kings. Team officials consider those picks valuable trade currency and are actively discussing additional transactions, according to the report.
Free agency looming for eight Bulls
Roster flexibility is a driving factor. The Bulls could have eight players hit free agency this summer, among them guards Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu. Chicago has explored trading White—who is expected to seek a significant raise—and has spoken with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Houston Rockets, though talks with both clubs remain open. Rival teams have reportedly shown greater interest in Dosunmu and San Antonio Spurs guard Tre Jones, viewing them as more affordable targets.
Long-term core taking shape
Internally, the franchise is focused on building around Josh Giddey, rookie Matas Buzelis and injured center Noa Essengue, The Athletic reported. Despite Essengue’s season-ending shoulder surgery, the organization still projects him as a future starter and defensive cornerstone.
Chicago has also indicated a willingness to reprise its role as a third-team facilitator if it results in acquiring additional draft assets.
