Portland, Ore. — The Portland Trail Blazers have contacted the Milwaukee Bucks about a potential trade involving Giannis Antetokounmpo, veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein said in his latest newsletter.
League sources told Stein that Portland’s interest centers on acting as a third-team facilitator rather than a final destination for the two-time MVP. The Blazers are aware that persuading Antetokounmpo to sign a long-term extension in the Pacific Northwest would be an improbable outcome.
As a middleman, Portland could leverage its cap flexibility and draft assets to absorb contracts, redirect salary and pick up one or two established veterans. Such a role could appeal to Milwaukee if the Bucks decide to prioritize future draft capital, financial flexibility or a partial roster reset.
Most executives around the league expect serious Antetokounmpo talks to stretch into the offseason. Once the draft lottery is set and additional first-round picks become trade-eligible, several teams will be able to submit stronger proposals. Milwaukee is in no rush to move its franchise cornerstone, according to the report.
The Golden State Warriors remain one of the most frequently mentioned suitors. Stein noted, however, that Jimmy Butler’s contract is now unlikely to be part of any Warriors offer after Butler’s season-ending knee injury. Draymond Green continues to be viewed as the likely salary-matching piece in any Golden State package.
The evolving market now includes Portland as a potential chess piece, adding another layer to the league-wide pursuit of Antetokounmpo.
