LeBron James Decries Bill Belichick’s First-Ballot Hall of Fame Rejection

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James publicly criticized the Pro Football Hall of Fame after former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick failed to earn induction in his first year of eligibility.
Belichick, 73, fell short of the 80 percent approval required from the Hall’s 50-member selection committee, meaning at least 11 voters left him off their ballots. The result stunned much of the sports community, including James, who expressed his frustration on X (formerly Twitter) on January 28:
“Man there’s no way I read that right! Right? Ain’t no WAY Bill Belichick ain’t 1st Ballot HOF!! That’s IMPOSSIBLE, EGREGIOUS, and quite frankly DISRESPECTFUL!”
Belichick is widely regarded as one of the NFL’s greatest coaches. He led the Patriots to six Super Bowl championships, captured another two titles with the New York Giants as defensive coordinator and was named Coach of the Year three times. His résumé made him a presumed first-ballot choice when he became eligible this year.
Speculation over the surprise result has centered on Belichick’s involvement in high-profile controversies during his New England tenure and his occasionally contentious relationship with the media. Nevertheless, figures across multiple sports voiced disbelief that such factors outweighed his record-setting success.
James compared the decision to the unthinkable notion of NBA icons like Phil Jackson, Pat Riley or Gregg Popovich missing out on immediate Hall of Fame honors, labeling the snub an unprecedented move in major professional sports.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame will announce its 2026 induction class later this year; Belichick will be eligible for consideration again in 2027.
