The Los Angeles Lakers were routed 129-99 by the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night, but the spotlight stayed on LeBron James and the possibility that the four-time MVP may have made his final appearance in his hometown as an NBA player.
James, 41, managed 11 points, five assists and three rebounds at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse before the game slipped out of reach in the third quarter. Afterward, he acknowledged the toll of two decades in the league. “I’m in a battle with Father Time and I’m taking it personally,” he said. “But I’m also not going to be one of those guys who hangs on too long.”
The forward admitted he could not guarantee another trip to Cleveland. “Just being present in the moment,” he added. “I don’t know if it’s my last time here or not.”
Short-handed Cavs dominate
Cleveland played without starters Evan Mobley, Darius Garland and Max Strus, yet still controlled the game behind 20 points from rookie Jaylon Tyson. Dean Wade and two-way forward NaeQwan Tomlin also outplayed James for stretches, underscoring the Lakers’ struggles and the veteran’s quieter night.
Emotional scenes postgame
Following the loss, James spent time signing autographs and greeting family members, including his mother, Gloria. At one point he asked, “Where’s Bronny at?” just as the hallway outside the Lakers’ locker room grew crowded. He grew emotional during those exchanges and had earlier teared up while a tribute video played inside the arena.
“A lot of memories here, a lot of history,” James said. “In every road arena I try to take it all in, because it could be—” his voice trailed off.
As he exited his news conference, a local reporter patted him on the back and joked, “See you next year.” James flashed a broad smile, leaving his future in Cleveland—and perhaps in the NBA—open-ended.
