SACRAMENTO — The Kings have stepped back from trade conversations involving guard Malik Monk, league sources told Marc Stein of The Stein Line on August 25. Sacramento explored multiple scenarios earlier in the offseason but is not presently negotiating a deal. While the pause does not guarantee Monk will open the 2025-26 campaign with the club, team officials are said to value the way the 27-year-old has embraced his role and the organization.

The Kings remain interested in adding former MVP Russell Westbrook to their backcourt. Front-office executives have weighed using a Monk trade to clear a spot for Westbrook, yet Stein reports that alternative roster moves are also under consideration.

Hawks take wait-and-see approach with Trae Young

In Atlanta, the Hawks do not intend to offer Trae Young an extension before the season, Stein writes. Management wants additional time to evaluate the All-Star guard alongside forward Jalen Johnson, whose 2024-25 season was cut short by a shoulder injury. The franchise hopes a longer look at that pairing—combined with recent roster changes—will clarify its long-term direction.

Georges Niang nearly suited up for Senegal

Veteran forward Georges Niang has obtained a Senegalese passport and came close to playing for Senegal at the 2025 AfroBasket, according to Stein. Two trades in quick succession—first from Atlanta to Boston, then from Boston to Utah—ultimately prevented the 32-year-old from joining the national team this summer.

Carlisle extension aims to steady Pacers

Rick Carlisle is one of six NBA head coaches to sign a new deal this offseason, joining Chauncey Billups, Will Hardy, Ime Udoka, Billy Donovan and Joe Mazzulla. Stein notes that Indiana rewarded Carlisle after five playoff series victories over the past two years and views the extension as a stabilizing measure following Tyrese Haliburton’s Achilles injury and the free-agent departure of long-time center Myles Turner.

Extension watch: P.J. Washington

Stein adds that Mavericks forward P.J. Washington remains a strong candidate for an extension before training camp begins.
