Heat Monitor EuroBasket as Jović, Larsson, Fontecchio Vie for Bigger Roles

With several rotation spots still unsettled, the Miami Heat are watching this summer’s EuroBasket tournament closely, hoping international play can clarify their depth chart heading into the 2025/26 NBA season.

Jović Aims to Reclaim Larger Role

Forward Nikola Jović has an opportunity to re-establish himself after seeing his duties reduced last year. The 22-year-old opened only 10 games in 2024/25—down from 38 the prior season—but still produced 10.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists while hitting 37.1 percent from three-point range. Head coach Erik Spoelstra, who traveled to Europe to observe, wants Jović to assume a leadership role for Serbia.

Spoelstra watched Serbia defeat Slovenia by 34 points in a recent exhibition, where Jović scored 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting. A strong EuroBasket showing could help the 6’10” forward secure a larger share of the minutes that remain behind established starters Tyler Herro, Andrew Wiggins and Bam Adebayo. Guards Davion Mitchell and center Kelel Ware also made significant claims last season, leaving the remaining roles up for grabs.

Spoelstra Checks In on Larsson

Before visiting Serbia, Spoelstra stopped in to watch swingman Pelle Larsson and the Swedish national team face Estonia. The 6’5” second-year Heat player is being evaluated as a potential ball-handler as well as a complementary wing.

“He’s so tough. He makes winning plays. He fits around our best players,” Spoelstra said, emphasizing Larsson’s work ethic and versatility. The coach’s remarks suggested the 24-year-old has already earned a place in Miami’s regular rotation.

Fontecchio Looks to Bounce Back

EuroBasket also offers newcomer Simone Fontecchio a chance to reset after a disappointing stint with Detroit last season. Miami hopes the 29-year-old Italian forward can rediscover the 40-percent three-point form he displayed in 2023/24, helping offset the departure of longtime marksman Duncan Robinson to the Pistons this offseason.

The Heat will continue monitoring their international contingent throughout EuroBasket as they finalize roles ahead of training camp.
