HOUSTON — Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka said Tuesday that center Steven Adams is out indefinitely after suffering what he described as a Grade 3 sprain of the left ankle.

Udoka delivered the update before Tuesday night’s meeting with the San Antonio Spurs at Toyota Center, noting that the team is still collecting medical opinions but does not expect Adams to return “anytime soon.”

The 32-year-old was injured Sunday during Houston’s victory over the New Orleans Pelicans. While helping Alperen Sengun defend Zion Williamson at the rim, Adams leapt to contest a shot, landed awkwardly and immediately grabbed at the ankle.

Following the game, Udoka said X-rays confirmed nothing was broken and clarified that the injury is not considered a high-ankle sprain, though significant swelling was already present.

Adams is averaging 5.8 points and 8.6 rebounds in 22.8 minutes this season for a Rockets squad that tops the NBA in rebounding at 49.2 per game. With Adams out, third-string center Clint Capela moves into the primary backup role behind Sengun, and Udoka indicated forward Jabari Smith Jr. could also log minutes at the five.

In a separate injury development, forward Tari Eason, who missed the past five games with a sprained right ankle, is available to play against San Antonio.
