The Golden State Warriors are facing dwindling leverage as they explore trade possibilities for forward Jonathan Kuminga, league sources told ESPN and The Athletic.
Team insiders said the franchise now views a deal as the “cleanest” solution after relations between Kuminga and the organization deteriorated. Even owner Joe Lacob, once considered one of the 23-year-old’s strongest backers, has cooled on the former lottery pick, according to the report.
Value has slipped
Kuminga’s market value has fallen after multiple games in which he did not play at coach’s decision this season. That decline has made it difficult for Golden State to secure the return it once sought.
The Sacramento Kings, who pursued Kuminga during the offseason, remain interested but are no longer willing to part with a first-round pick, sources said. An earlier framework centered on guard Malik Monk and a protected future first has reportedly been reduced.
Public stance vs. league perception
The Warriors have maintained publicly that they are prepared to keep Kuminga beyond the February 5 trade deadline and revisit options this summer if no satisfactory offer surfaces. Rival front offices, however, believe Golden State’s bargaining position is weaker than advertised.
The organization now faces a choice: accept a reduced package and move on, or hold the 6-foot-8 forward and hope his value rebounds over time. Either option underscores a consensus around the league that the current situation is unsustainable.
