The New York Knicks have expressed interest in free-agent shooter Malik Beasley, according to a report from Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.

Beasley, 27, became available late in the offseason after federal investigators cleared him in a gambling case that had lingered since early July. ESPN reported Friday that the guard is no longer a subject of the probe, removing the obstacle that halted his previous contract talks.

Before the investigation surfaced, the Detroit Pistons had discussed a three-year, $42 million deal to keep Beasley, Fischer noted. When the probe began, Detroit ended negotiations, leaving the veteran without a team.

The Knicks’ interest dates back to the first round of the playoffs in May, when New York and Detroit met, according to Fischer. SNY’s Ian Begley also listed the Knicks as a potential destination, pointing to the club’s need for additional wing depth while operating with limited cap flexibility under the first apron.

Beasley averaged 16.3 points and shot 43 percent from three-point range last season, appearing in all 82 games for Detroit. His performance made him a finalist for the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award.

With Beasley now cleared and on the open market, league observers are watching to see how quickly his market develops and whether New York moves to add another perimeter threat.
