LeBron James Says Rich Paul Speaks Only for Himself on Lakers Trade Ideas

Los Angeles — LeBron James emphasized Tuesday that comments made by longtime agent Rich Paul on the “Game Over with Max Kellerman and Rich Paul” podcast do not represent the four-time MVP’s views on the Lakers’ roster.
“Rich is his own man and what Rich says is not a direct reflection of me and how I feel,” James told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin before the Lakers faced Atlanta. “I have zero conversations about what his topics are going to be. He is his own man and that is his platform.”
During the most recent episode of the podcast, Paul suggested Los Angeles pursue Memphis center Jaren Jackson Jr. and be willing to send guard Austin Reaves and a future first-round pick to the Grizzlies. Paul argued the move would give the Lakers a defensive anchor and greater financial flexibility, adding, “There’s a world where you can do what’s best for your team and do what’s best for Austin.”
Reaves, 27, is sidelined with a grade 2 strain of his left gastrocnemius. He is averaging 26.6 points, 6.3 assists and 5.2 rebounds while shooting .507 from the field, .365 from three and .873 at the line in 23 games. The guard holds a $14.9 million player option for 2026-27 but is widely expected to opt out and enter unrestricted free agency in 2026.
Some observers have questioned whether the Lakers can build a post-LeBron roster around two offense-first guards in Luka Doncic and Reaves — a concern Paul echoed on the podcast. Paul previously said in December that Los Angeles, then 17-6, was not a legitimate title contender “as currently comprised.”
Reaves’ representative Reggie Berry of AMR Agency spoke with Paul for roughly five minutes during Tuesday’s game at Crypto.com Arena. According to ESPN, the conversation centered on Paul’s trade proposal, but James insisted the topic has not created friction between him and his teammate. “AR knows how I feel about him,” James said. “People should realize grown men can say whatever they want and it shouldn’t reflect on someone else.”
Jackson told reporters Wednesday he also heard the podcast remarks but brushed them off. “There’s just a lot of podcasts,” he said with a laugh. “At first I didn’t think it was real… I was figuring out if it’s AI, deepfake, all that stuff.”
