Atlanta general manager Onsi Saleh said he saw no reason to delay last Friday’s deal that sent Trae Young to the Washington Wizards nearly a month before the February 5 trade deadline.
“If a move makes sense, we make it,” Saleh told reporters Monday. He added that the package from Washington—headlined by CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert—delivered immediate help, future flexibility and additional depth, eliminating any desire to shop for alternatives.
While thanking Young and his family for their impact on the franchise, Saleh emphasized that the organization believes the incoming veterans complement a core that includes Jalen Johnson, Dyson Daniels, Onyeka Okongwu, Zacch Risacher and Nickeil Alexander-Walker.
McCollum’s contract status
McCollum, 34, is in the final season of his contract. Saleh declined to say whether extension talks have begun but described the guard as someone who “could fit here long term.” Recent reports have indicated Atlanta is open to a new agreement.
Draft priorities
The Hawks own three selections in the 2026 draft, including the more favorable first-rounder between New Orleans and Milwaukee, a pick that could land in the top five. Saleh called the draft the club’s “biggest transaction period” and said Atlanta “has to get it right” to continue building internally.
Early returns on newcomers
McCollum and Kispert made their Atlanta debuts in Sunday’s win over Golden State. Although they combined to shoot 5-for-18, McCollum posted a game-best plus-19 in 24 minutes off the bench. Head coach Quin Snyder praised the veteran’s poise and stabilizing presence.
Injury updates
The team reclassified Risacher’s recent absence from left knee inflammation to a left knee bone contusion. The rookie is listed as questionable for Tuesday’s matchup with the Lakers. Center Kristaps Porzingis will sit out a third straight game because of left Achilles tendinitis.
